Some of the classic hikes include Helvellyn and Striding Edge, Cat Bells and Derwent Water. The Old Man of Coniston and Skiddaw are other walks and climbs worth doing. There are also a lot of leisurely circular strolls that usually involve a tea room or a pub en route. Grasmere is the setting for Wordsworth’s daffodils and at Windermere the countryside that inspired Beatrix Potter is magnificent. Her farm is open to the public and a delightful day out. Sailing on the lakes is another popular activity in Cumbria and there are several boats for hire as well as sailing instruction.
